Modifying VISTA's resources

I'm having problem modifying Microsoft Vista Beta 1's resources.

Please look at the pictures:





It has a different format. What is that "MUI" resource? Where are the old "string" and "menu" resources? And why can't I grab the 1st icon resource? It says it's corrupted. I'm not sure if it is packed by an EXE packager, because this is what PEiD says:


But knowing Microsoft, they never use EXE packagers for their EXEs DLLs, ect..

MUI = Multilingual User Interface

No idea about the rest of your post tho' - maybe Microsoft got fedup of there applications being cracked on the day of release and have written there own exe protector? Can you see any plain text when opening the exe with a hex editor?

Resources for .NET are packaged differently. I will see if it makes sense to add support for those resources in Restorator.

I don't know if anyone's still interested but to change dialogs and message tables and strings you have to edit the correspondent *.mui files.
There are folders in WinVista called MUI. They contain these *.mui files, e.g. the correspondent mui file for explorer.exe is called explorer.exe.mui and can be found in X:\windows\mui.
Many other mui files are located in X:\windows\system32\mui
